Citadel BBQ Reviews
I’m excited to have this place so close to the office! As a tradition, at any new BBQ joint I get the two meat plate - brisket and sausage. The brisket is about par for the course for a location that can’t smoke; thin and tougher without the smoky flavor, but still satisfies. However, I will probably rely on other joints for brisket. The jalapeño + cheese sausage was great, and the corn was amazing. Mac + cheese is about a 7/10.The space is really spacious and airy, a little on the modern side for a BBQ joint. Fits in with a downtown vibe. The service was excellent and speedy, and prices are about right for the area.As they just opened, I can’t wait to see how they evolve over time. I’ll definitely come back and get a few of their other offerings here soon and update accordingly!
Apr 05, 2022 · Austin PooleyHad to stop at Citadel BBQ because of the name. Just down from my hotel too. Very good brisket and sausage! Home made spicy BBQ sauce is great. Homemade sides too! I got Mac & cheese and coke slaw. Both very good. Nice staff. Looks like full bar will open soon. You should stop here!
Jan 06, 2023 · Bulldog***Response to Owner Below***Bad service. Bad food. Rude employees. An employee treated a police officer very rudely and refuse service to him as soon as he walked in. Unacceptable. The food is not impressive anyways. I HOPE they close down soon.***UPDATE TO OWNER***People use various names in reviews all of the time in a public forum, particularly to an establishment of which treated someone poorly. The last thing anyone wants is to be a victim of a restaurant’s rude tendencies. There is no reason to post anything like this unless it happened. There are plenty of better things to do with time. I hope those cameras have audio recording. That cop was in there for no more than 15 seconds when an employee was rude to him. He then left immediately. And then to find out that the police station is ACROSS THE STREET from there. What a shame. Take the blame for what happened. To flat out say this did not happen is either a lie or just ignorance.Seriously if it was a one time incident just address it with the employee and post that! Kinda seems like that would fix the issue.***UPDATE***As expected: restaurant is closed down. Perhaps a better attitude will yield better business venture outcomes in the future.
Sep 20, 2024 · W SpinnerAs much as H-Town is a BBQ mecca, this sadly doesn't make the cut. It wasn't bad BBQ by any definition, but there are many places with much better BBQ.My first issue was that when ordering the 2-meat plate, I couldn't choose ribs and brisket which is my go-to at every other bbq joint. And the two meats by which I judge a bbq joint. I couldn't even order just double ribs. You have to choose a lesser meat for the second choice (chicken, sausage, etc). That is not the standard at every decent bbq joint I have been to in Houston. My second issue is that the ribs were just OK. I have had ribs and brisket from countless BBQ joints in Texas and mostly in the Houston area, these were about a 6.5 on a 1-10 scale. Not bad, not spectacular.I ordered fried okra and Mac n cheese as my sides. Again, good but not great. Nothing made them above average.Lastly the BBQ sauce was much too sweet. More of a KC style sauce than a TX style sauce. If that's your preference, please enjoy, but that's not TX bbq sauce. For the higher price of a BBQ meal I want moaning and groaning excellence. This was good because someone was treating me to the meal, but I wouldn't go back on my own. Too many other superior choices in town.
Apr 19, 2024 · B. A. M.I really wanted this to be good because it is right next to the building I work in. I had the 2 meat plate with chicken, ribs, mac and creamed corn. The chicken had pleasant flavor but was dry. The ribs were very dry also which could be because they gave me the end pieces. The ribs were also very salty. The corn tasted great but it had all the salt it could handle. They could have added an extra 16oz can of corn to it and you wouldn't need to add more salt. So if you took a bite of the ribs you couldn't eat the corn because now they both taste way to salty. I saw someone described the BBQ sauce as "Ketchup with extra black pepper" which is pretty accurate. But like that thin ketchup not a good thick ketchup. The mac n cheese was pretty good. I have no complaints with the mac. I'd go back if all I was getting was the mac. All of this for $19. I read some mixed reviews so maybe it's dependent on what pit master is working. $19 is to much for me to roll the dice on which chef is working. 3-24-23
