Flying Idlis takes a distinctive approach to these traditional dishes, offering a variety of flavors and fillings, from plain to spicy and infused with different vegetables, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to classic fare.
Located amidst the bustling energy of downtown Houston, Flying Idlis strives to provide a quick yet satisfying culinary experience for both long-time lovers of South Indian food and those curious to explore its vibrant flavors. While some establishments focus on a broad Indian menu, Flying Idlis prides itself on its specialization, promising a focused and innovative take on idlis and dosas. This article will delve into the specific aspects of Flying Idlis at 720 Rusk St, offering insights into its location, services, and the overall experience it aims to deliver to the local community.

While specific details about parking aren't always explicit for downtown locations, there are typically numerous paid parking garages and street parking options available throughout the area, though it's always advisable to plan for parking during peak hours. The central placement ensures that whether you're commuting to work, running errands downtown, or exploring the city, Flying Idlis is a convenient spot to grab a bite of South Indian comfort food.

- Inconsistent Food Quality: Some reviews indicate significant issues with food taste and quality, describing certain dishes (e.g., "Magic Idli," dosa, "Aloo Bhaji and Puri") as "soggy and hard and tasteless," or "bitter." This suggests potential inconsistencies in food preparation.
- Missed Expectations: Customers with specific expectations for authentic South Indian breakfast have reported being "made us feel so bad" due to the food quality not meeting their standards.
- Potential for Improvement: One review explicitly states the restaurant "has some potential if only they fixed these logistical problems regarding the taste and the quality of food they are providing."

Its location at 720 Rusk St places it within easy reach for office workers and urban residents seeking a quick and specific type of Indian food. The stated "great service" and "good ambiance for breakfast" can contribute to a pleasant dining experience, making it a potentially appealing choice for a relaxed start to the day or a break during work.
However, for Flying Idlis to truly become a consistent favorite among locals, addressing the feedback regarding food quality and consistency is crucial. Houstonians are discerning diners, and while convenience and atmosphere are important, the taste and authenticity of the food are paramount. If Flying Idlis can ensure that its "Magic Idlis" and dosas live up to their potential consistently, and that other dishes like "Aloo Bhaji and Puri" meet higher standards, it has the foundation to attract and retain a loyal customer base. The niche it fills – specializing in a distinct and beloved segment of Indian cuisine – offers significant potential.
In summary, Flying Idlis is suitable for locals who are adventurous with their food choices, appreciate the convenience of a downtown location, and are keen to try a different take on South Indian staples like idlis and dosas. While it offers a pleasant atmosphere and can provide quick service, for it to truly excel and become a consistent local recommendation, continuous improvement in the quality and consistency of its culinary offerings will be key. Flying Idlis Reviews
5/5 great service, food and experience.Small restaurant in downtown that serves great South Indian food - mainly Dosas (Indian rice batter crepes) and Idlis (rice batter cakes). They have taken a different approach on this and service different variety from plain to spicy and with different veggies and such. Highly recommend it.
Aug 01, 2021 · Mohit MehtajiNot so recommended as taste was that much worthy. We just wanted to eat some south indian food( breakfast) after a long time with some expectations on Flying Idli’s but they made us feel-so bad.We ordered some Magic Idli’s with was soggy and hard and tasteless and also same with the dosa. Later we tried Aloo bhaji and puri which so bad( puri was bitter and aloo was tasteless). So we decided to end it up and came out by paying for that. But they have nice place and location and even the ambiance for the breakfast is good to spend like an hour and they have some music playing on background. It has some potential if only they fixed these logistical problems regarding the taste and the quality of food they are providing they will be get good business and can attract more customers.
Mar 23, 2024 · SYAM TINKUGreat spot for south indian breakfast. The floating idli comes in a bowl full of sambar, with idlis dipped in. The sambar could be better, it tasted more so like andhra lunch sambar, rather than a tiffen sambar. Loved the fiery masala dosa, the potato masala is slathered all over the dosa, with a hint of hotness coming from the spice powder sprinkled atop the potato masala. Masala chai is good, but a bit watery for my liking.
